Global Math brought to you by iEARN
This project includes several collaborative activities throughout the school year. Students use basic secondary mathematics to observe symmetry in their surroundings, compare regional temperatures, model population growth, gather statistics about their communities and measure the size of Earth. The goal is to use mathematics as a common language to facilitate investigation and collaboration.
Classroom collaboration activities include:
Lifestyle Statistics - from different classrooms create a common survey of quantitative data about their community and school (ex. How many languages do you speak?). This data is shared and analyzed.
Geometry in your Community - students post and share photos from their community that illustrate geometrical properties and principles.
How's the Weather? - students collect and compare monthly temperature data for their region. Depending on the level of the students we can use linear or sinusoidal models to compare.
World Population - students gather data on our changing world population. Depending on the level of the students we can use exponential models or systems of linear equations.
Earth Measurement - based on the experiment by Eratosthenes, students use the shadows of meter sticks measured at the same time around the world to calculate the size of the Earth.
